The Covenantal Son (Genesis 21:1-3)
Before Abraham left Haran, God promised him a land and innumerable descendants. Several times over a period of 25 years, God reaffirmed His promise. Now, Sarah had given birth to a son!
Before Abraham left Haran, God promised him a land and innumerable descendants. Several times over a period of 25 years, God reaffirmed His promise. Now, Sarah had given birth to a son!
So Abraham prayed to God; and God healed Abimelech . . .
The announcement was no surprise to Abraham. He had heard it only a few days earlier. The message was for Sarah.
God said: “No, Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his descendants after him.”
The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
Like the author of the 18th Psalm, Abram learned that he could trust God in every situation. The longer he walked with God the stronger his faith became.
The fact that Abram’s descendants would live outside the land for 400 years is immaterial. God defines the land as an eternal possession.
