Solomon’s request demonstrated humility rather than self-aggrandizement with a willingness to submit to God’s authority versus selfish ambition.
Solomon’s accession to the throne should have been seamless. His older brother Adonijah, however, complicated matters putting their father’s resolve to the test.
Christians are familiar with part of God’s message to Solomon. We eagerly embrace the broader application for ourselves, but either ignore or forget that God’s promise was specific to the people of Israel and the land of Israel.
The euphoric celebration surrounding the dedication of the temple suddenly hushed as King Solomon stood to speak to the people of Israel. It was the day after the 7-day celebration of Sukkot. For another seven days, the nation would celebrate the dedication of the temple.
It’s natural for Christians to project their own cultural experience into the context of Scripture. But, our concept of an hour-long formal church service followed by light refreshments—does not do justice to Solomon’s dedicatory celebration.
