I lived on the southern coast of England during part of my childhood. A favorite Summer’s day outing began with walking out the back gate and trekking four miles across the South Downs to the chalk cliffs overlooking Beachy Head Lighthouse.
Over the years, I saw the lighthouse from almost every vantage point. Whether viewed from the adjacent shoreline or the cliffs above, that structure represented stability and dependability.
Despite enormous waves and crashing gale-force winds, to this day a powerful beam shines from Beachy Head across the English Channel. Engulfed in dense fog, the beacon still shines without interruption accompanied by the deep resonating tone of a foghorn that put me to sleep on many winter nights.
The lighthouse provides a visual image of a concept the apostle Paul communicated to the Corinthian church.
1 CORINTHIANS 15:58 (CJB)
“So, my dear brothers, stand firm and immovable, always doing the Lord’s work as vigorously as you can, knowing that united with the Lord your efforts are not in vain.”
Paul informs us that the life of faith is not theoretical, but intensely practical. He stirs us to consistent positive action in service for the Lord. Why? Paul explains at the end of the verse.
People of faith have purpose.
When tempted to give up in times of adversity, he challenges us to stand firm with unfaltering perseverance. In the face of intimidating opposition, he encourages us to demonstrate faith that is resolute and unwavering.
We are to be energetic, vigorous and tireless in our work for the Lord because the Bible assures that whatever we do in service for Him has lasting value (Gal. 6:9 cf. Col. 3:23-24).
We must not allow adverse circumstances to distract, deter or discourage us from accomplishing God’s purpose for our lives
The world today is in desperate need of Christians whose testimonies shine like a beacon. People of faith must not only be stirred to action in meeting the needs of surrounding culture, but also be characterized by steadfast faith that can weather the inherent storms of life.
The apostle’s words are profound and require a decisive choice. Stand firm and be a beacon of light because united with Christ, your works have eternal significance.
