Abram’s experiential relationship with God was new and in many ways untested.  When faced with a seeming insurmountable problem, Abram was fearful.

GENESIS 12:11-12 (NIV)
“As he [Abram] was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, I know what a beautiful woman you are.  When the Egyptians see you, they will say, “This is his wife.”  Then they will kill me but will let you live.’”

As their relationship with the Lord grew, Abram and Sarai would understand a principle David articulated in the 56th Psalm:

Tissot_The_Egyptians_Admire_Sarai's_Beauty_t“Whenever I am afraid, I will trust in You. In God (I will praise His word), in God I have put my trust; I will not fear. What can flesh do to me?

You number my wanderings; put my tears into Your bottle; are they not in Your book?

When I cry out to You, then my enemies will turn back; this I know, because God is for me.

In God (I will praise His word), in the Lord (I will praise His word), in God I have put my trust; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?” (Ps. 56:3-4, 8-11).

God was not only intimately aware of every aspect of Abram’s life, but also willing to intervene on behalf his well-being and best interest  (vv. 14-20). As his relationship with God developed over time, Abram learned to trust God even in the most seemingly impossible situations.

In the same way, the more we learn to depend on God the less fearful we will be facing difficult circumstances in our own lives.
