What’s New?

ACTION ALERT

Recently, I joined 19 leaders in the Jewish community for a briefing by Daniel Pollak, the Zionist Organization of America’s Co-Director of Government Relations. The “What’s New in Washington When it Comes to Israel?” briefing was positive in many respects and recognized the current administration’s demonstrable support for Israel.

The President’s policies, however, are opposed by groups and individuals on the other side of the aisle persisting in an obstructionist stance. Iran’s violation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPA) and the Palestinian Authority’s “pay-to -slay” policy were highlighted at the briefing as troubling issues the administration is currently addressing.

The lifting of economic sanctions along with more than $150 billion in cash from the United States provided Iran with the means to fund proxy terrorist organizations worldwide. The biggest threat not only to Israel, but also the United States, Iran has routinely violated the JCPA (Iran Nuclear Deal).

Two bills in Congress address the issue.

  • HR 1698Iran Ballistic Missiles and International Sanctions Enforcement Act authorizes the President to report credible violations of the agreement for the purpose of restoring sanctions.
  • S15The Non-Nuclear Sanctions Act would require enforcing sanctions on Iran’s support of terrorism, ballistic missile program and human rights abuses.

The Taylor Force Act – HR 1164 currently before the House of Representatives limits the Palestinian Authority (PA) from using relief funding from the United States to reward terrorists and their families. If pay-to-slay is not discontinued, the Taylor Force Act will curtail funding to the PA by $320 million or more per year to counter the $300 million paid annually to terrorists and their families. The U.S. has given some $600 million per year in financial assistance to the PA since 2008.

Please contact your senators and representatives to encourage them to support these important bills.

It’s was a distinct privilege to have been invited to the noon meeting. My thanks to ZOA for hosting the briefing and those who made it possible.
