1 CORINTHIANS 15:57
CHRISTIAN LIVING 21C
On February 26, 1979, my wife and I skied to the top of Bridger Bowl for the final total eclipse of the 20th century over the continental United States.
Surrounded by others with the same idea, we had planned and prepared for the event. The mountain was dotted with about 100 people—all wearing protective eye gear. We pulled welder’s masks from knapsacks watching through the highly tinted lenses as the edge of the moon crept slowly across the face of the sun.
At first, people around us talked excitedly. Their voices echoed across the snowy terrain. A few howled like wolves as the eclipse neared climax.
For a brief moment, there was an eerie silence as we all stood in the twilight haze of totality. Nothing could be seen of the sun except for the wispy ring of the corona.
Then, cheers erupted as a diamond of sunlight re-appeared at the top right. The darkness experienced a few minutes earlier was only temporary. The sun was reemerging. It was an unforgettable experience.
People keep asking, How will those living in the United States be affected by today’s solar eclipse? If the clouds clear in time, my wife and I can expect 76 percent totality. Most of our relatives out West will experience nearly 99 percent.
Here’s what we can take away from the experience.
You can use the August 21, 2017 eclipse to be reminded that a spiritual battle is raging in the world. It’s the quintessential battle between good and evil, truth and the lie—light versus darkness. But, Paul reminds us of the final outcome:
1 CORINTHIANS 15:57
. . . thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
Regardless of how much the sun is obscured in your area, today’s solar eclipse is like a cosmic visual aid reminding us that no matter how dominant the forces of darkness may appear in our culture, their effect is temporary.
The Light is always victorious in the end.
Enjoy the day!
