Happy Canada Day!

SEASONS

Today, Canadians celebrate Canada Day worldwide to commemorate the nation’s founding in 1867 with the signing of the Constitution Act (formerly the British North America Act). The following excerpt from the 33rd Psalm is a reminder of the blessing that comes to nations that honor God:

PSALM 33:12-22

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord,
The people He has chosen as His own inheritance.

 The Lord looks from heaven;
He sees all the sons of men.
From the place of His dwelling He looks
On all the inhabitants of the earth;
He fashions their hearts individually;
He considers all their works.

No king is saved by the multitude of an army;
A mighty man is not delivered by great strength.
A horse is a vain hope for safety;
Neither shall it deliver any by its great strength.

Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him,
On those who hope in His mercy,
To deliver their soul from death,
And to keep them alive in famine.

Our soul waits for the Lord;
He is our help and our shield.
For our heart shall rejoice in Him,
Because we have trusted in His holy name.
Let Your mercy, O Lord, be upon us,
Just as we hope in You.

The psalm refers specifically to Israel, but the principles listed extend to any nation with biblical values. Canada’s national anthem, “O Canada”, strikes the proper balance:

“God keep our land, glorious and free!

O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.”

As is always the case, however, the biblical worldview that once defined a nation may be pushed aside for the sake of expediency and accommodation. The antidote is vigilance in defending foundational biblical principles.
