Feasts of the Lord

PASSOVER: Telling the Generation to Come

Telling the Generation to Come
Today’s Text: Psalm 78 Excerpts
SEASONS: PASSSOVER

Delivering Israel from Egypt was a spectacular event; but, God’s equally spectacular care for the nation is encapsulated in the following excerpt from the 78th Psalm:

“Give ear, O my people, to my law;
Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.

I will open my mouth in a parable;
I will utter dark sayings of old,
Which we have heard and known,
And our fathers have told us.

We will not hide them from their children,

Telling to the generation to come the praises of the Lord,
And His strength and His wonderful works that He has done.

Marvelous things He did in the sight of their fathers,
In the land of Egypt, in the field of Zoan.

He divided the sea and caused them to pass through;

And He made the waters stand up like a heap.

In the daytime also He led them with the cloud,
And all the night with a light of fire.

He split the rocks in the wilderness,
And gave them drink in abundance like the depths.

He also brought streams out of the rock,
And caused waters to run down like rivers.

He also chose David His servant,
And took him from the sheepfolds;
From following the ewes that had young He brought him,
To shepherd Jacob His people,
And Israel His inheritance.
So he shepherded them according to the integrity of his heart,
And guided them by the skillfulness of his hands” (Ps. 78:1-4, 12-16, 70-72).

The psalm in its entirety is a reminder of God’s faithfulness to His Chosen People. Retelling Israel’s history, God informs—about the miracles of the Exodus, His provision in the wilderness, His defense of Israel from enemies and the inauguration of the Davidic Dynasty to furnish leadership for the nation—so that future generations would not only remember history, but grasp that Israel’s very existence is dependent upon Him.

The celebration of Passover was mandated by God to ensure that the descendants of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob-Israel would never forget His faithfulness.

  1. Recounting God’s provision during Israel’s Exodus from Egypt is not only the responsibility of the Jewish people, but Christians should do this as well. Passover reminds me that God can be trusted to keep His promises. Just look at the nation of Israel!
